I get carried away talking about fluorite.Secret Aging Man (SAM)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17047916949590811470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999389688482604348.post-15004137719323259122009-04-12T21:57:00.000-05:002009-04-12T21:57:00.000-05:00Nice to meet you, Mr. Secret Aging Man! I remember being interested--for a short time--in rocks in junior high when we had to make a rock collection. Fluorite was one of my favorites, just because it was so "pretty." It was also one of the easier minerals to identify:)Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01384059342847120951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999389688482604348.post-50267493363461294472009-04-08T20:45:00.000-05:002009-04-08T20:45:00.000-05:00Michelle, I doubt if I would have ever been fit fo...Michelle, I doubt if I would have ever been fit for FBI type service, even at a younger age. Good luck to your daughter and her exciting choice of careers.

Sarah, my aging has never been a secret around here. My daughter loves to rib me with "old man" remarks. Oh well...guess the hands of time stand still for no one.

WS, thanks for the kind remarks for the old man. I wanted Sean to say, "Shave the city", but wasn't sure if that was appropriate for a blog!Secret Aging Man (SAM)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17047916949590811470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999389688482604348.post-33216024847997314712009-04-08T18:20:00.000-05:002009-04-08T18:20:00.000-05:00Wow, I knew your old lady could write, but I see i...Wow, I knew your old lady could write, but I see it rubbed off on you (or vice versa). Your essay was more than merely edumacational (sic). It was a lovely tribute to your parents, your love of pretty rocks, and a wonderful character sketch of who you are. But my fave part was the Sean Connery you envisioned as shaving the world. I could actually hear his voice saying that.Weeping Sorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05617503185773155102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999389688482604348.post-43773892926756970722009-04-08T11:21:00.000-05:002009-04-08T11:21:00.000-05:00Interesting rocks, SAM. My daughter is a psychologist and will be going to work for the federal prison system (hopefully) next fall. She will have to take the training that the FBI gives..including arms training and agility. I wish I would be there to see her complete those tasks..Yes..she loves prison work and did a year in a mens' prison in OK and loved it...sigh.. Something must have happened to the smart young man over a course of years... too many brain cells died off!

Chandramouli, we tend to get a good laugh off each other more frequently now than in the past. I guess the older one gets, the funnier looking one becomes.

Robert V., I have indeed rediscovered the tactile pleasures of my mineral collection. More importantly, remembering past "collecting" events grounds me in who I am. It's hard to know where you are going without recalling who you are and where you have come from.Secret Aging Man (SAM)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17047916949590811470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999389688482604348.post-59715714531576108712009-04-07T19:23:00.000-05:002009-04-07T19:23:00.000-05:00They look like they would be fun to hold, to feel ...They look like they would be fun to hold, to feel their weight, and look at their multi-coated colors. Most of the mines were about 1,000 feet deep and explosives were used to break the rock into transportable size. As I understand it, (never got to go into the mines) a blast would occasionally open a "vug" or large hollow area, filled with the crystalline specimens. Miners would normally take a few minutes to hand collect the best pieces before the mining process recommenced.

Sweet Bay, I know it sounds weird that minerals were like contraband, but it sure seemed that way to me. At least it added some intrigue to our collecting trips!Secret Aging Man (SAM)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17047916949590811470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999389688482604348.post-2039799676370981232009-04-07T12:26:00.000-05:002009-04-07T12:26:00.000-05:00Beautiful crystals, and very interesting post.
