Tommy Emmanuel Visits Pensacola and Makes Waves

Who is the greatest guitarist alive? Live (in concert)? I would argue that Tommy Emmanuel is the answer to both questions. If you watch just a few minutes of this rather lengthy video, you will understand what I mean.

To top off the celebration of our 33rd wedding anniversary this past weekend, SAM and I attended a concert sponsored by WSRE (local PBS station) at Pensacola State College (Jean and Paul Amos Performance Studio) on Sunday evening. The auditorium was rather small, but the experience was huge.

It's a wave that washes over your head and carries you away. You don't mind, though. You are not afraid. The music immerses you, but you're not submerged. You become part of the liquid, the music, the response. Do you respond by clapping, whistling, hooting? It doesn't matter if you just sit there like a lump. Well, maybe it does matter. Cameras all around the auditorium are capturing every movement, every expression of joy, sorrow, elation, adulation. The entire concert is being recorded.

Who knows? There might be a shot of SAM and me in a new video production someday. Now that's a scary thought!

  1. Oh, you lucky girl!! He makes my heart throb. His skill on that guitar is astounding. I'd give anything to be able to attend one of his performances, esp. in a small venue!

  2. Lucky for us, Karen, the tickets were a "gift" to us in return for a donation to WSRE. Our seats were in a superb spot on the floor of the auditorium. The concert was the icing on the anniversary cake for us.

  4. Happy 33rd Anniversary! Music is a lovely way to celebrate, and I am impressed by Emmanuel's skill. My daughter has been taking guitar lessons for a couple of years and aspires to such dexterity.

  5. It was even better than the concert portrayed in this video, Mark. Tommy had some brand new music for us. I am really looking forward to buying the recording. Thanks for the good wishes.

Sarah, our very first date was supposed to be a Leo Kottke concert, but it sold out before SAM was able to get tickets. He wasn't about to let another golden opportunity slip by. I'm sure your daughter will be great at the guitar if she has a passion for it and practices faithfully. If she has already been playing for a couple of years now she's conquered the hardest part: sore fingers!

  10. Happy wedding anniversary,w2w!
How nice to spend the anniversary listening to your favorite music with your loved one! I can imagine how you were suffused with excitement and contentment on such a special occasion.
Do you think you behaved yourself just in case, by the way?:)
    I'm really happy for you!

  11. Britta, thanks (for the good wishes) but no thanks to being in the video. I would rather be heard (clapping, hooting) and not seen.

Thank you, Skeeter and Julie. So far, this was one of my favorite anniversaries. I will remember it every time I hear Mr. Emmanuel playing one of his songs.

Wayne, I quite agree with you. The music swirl is almost as good as marble cake but not fattening at all!

Cosmos, thank you. Truth be told, Mr. Emmanuel was not familiar to us before we heard him on one of those fundraising concerts they have on public television. The tickets to the concert were offered to attract new donors. I'm glad we were "suckered" into making a donation. I guess we behaved ourselves at the concert. At one point, I felt like making bunny ears over the head of the lady who sat next to me, but I resisted the urge. (She kept making this ear-piercing whistle with her fingers and speaking loudly when everyone else had gotten quiet.)
