Life in the Fast Lane in Northwest Florida

Okay, so life isn't so exciting this time of year in Northwest Florida for most people. We, always the walkers, tried our hand at bowling on January 16, 2010, at Avalon Bowling near Pensacola, Florida, since the weather wasn't so accommodating for walking outside. Kelly Kulick, on the other hand--well done, by the way--might have some fine pointers to help us walkers on the matter of bowling. When the weather's in the gutter, you gotta thank your mutter for takin' ya to the place that might just set the pace for life in the fast lane... Our son at one time was keen on making his mark in the auto body scene, which is definitely something Kelly Kulick might understand. Son's game plan has changed a bit since his mutter--and vater!--showed him how to stay outta the gutter.

  8. I bowled on a league for several years. Back when I was skinny. My average never got much higher than 150 or so. I enjoyed it much. Have you decided to buy your own bowling balls and shoes yet? Or do they allow walkin shoes at the lanes y'all visit? ;~)

  9. Thanks, Julie. SAM and I both contributed stories to the book. We hope you enjoy reading everyone's stories and trying some of the recipes.

Tina, so did I. When I sat down to compose a post last night, I had a completely different one in mind and realized it could wait. Ms. Kulick's story inspired me!

Welcome and thank you, MarthaE. I guess you mean our grandson when you say cute. Our son is the tall guy in the pic who is giving the youngest bowler in the family a lesson on the lane. Thanks for promoting Florida authors. Some of us are just getting started and can use the help.

THL, Kerala is going on my list of places to visit in India someday.

Marnie, you've got to give it another try. I do recommend using a light-weight ball at first. My arm is still a little sore!

Hi, Lola! We used to bowl fairly often too. The game is still a mystery to me. Why is it that I could bowl a game in the 200s after downing a few drinks--that was 25 years ago, by the way--and can't even score 100 while perfectly sober? My technique hasn't changed at all, and I don't think lots of practice would even help. I'm still just as clumsy as ever. Maybe I should try bumper bowling again.

  10. TC, your comment slipped past me. I don't think we're ready for primetime bowling yet. I've never been consistently good or bad at the game, so a league wouldn't know what to do with me. Street shoes are still not allowed. Didn't you notice how polished looking that floor is? Micah did manage to squeeze under the rule, though. I guess they don't rent shoes that small.

  11. I see that ball in the gutter but a big strike with the adults for sure....

The museum is a wonderful place to hide during the cold months. Think it is about time for us to visit our information center to the city as well. It has been a while. We so like to do the tourist thing during the low season. We feel like the place belongs to us and us alone hee hee…

  12. What a fun post this is, W2W. I also loved catching up on some previous posts. Thank you very much for all the information and super photos from your visit to the museum--we need to see it sometime.

  13. Hey, Skeeter! I'd like to see some aspects of your city as well. The ball in the gutter was great fun for Micah. He probably thought it was a waste of time to mess up those neatly arranged pins!

Hi, Mary, and thanks. Maybe you could do a post about things to do in Jax for us northwesterners. We lived in St. Augustine for about a year a while back but didn't get to see much of Jacksonville, or at least I didn't. My husband and son worked for various consultants there when we owned an environmental service company.

  14. We're definitely not living in the fast lane here in Illinois right now either:) Bowling was the one sport this athletically-challenged blogger was actually decent at. These days, though, I'd like to bowl the way my grandkids do--with the guards on the gutters:)

Congratulations on your contributions to the new book--I'll have to check this out!

Your question about my hydrangea in my last post--no, it's not an "Annabelle." It's a "Limelight" which can grow in full sun. It's still a baby, but can grow fairly large.

  15. Rose, thanks for answering my question and noticing the book link. SAM and I don't earn anything other than participatory satisfaction from the sale of the book. How's that for a disclaimer?
